Pregnancy and Post-Partum

While you are pregnant, many exciting changes are occurring to your body. Often times these changes can aggravate common orthopedic issues. Simply standing or walking is an example of something that use to be pain-free and now may be causing considerable pain. It is important to work with a physical therapist who is comfortable and knowledgeable about the changes your body is going through. This often allows for the best possible treatment.

Common pregnancy related conditions that we treat:

  • Dependent edema (swelling of the legs)

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

  • Postural dysfunction

  • Thoracic outlet syndrome

  • Patellofemoral dysfunction (knee pain)

  • Hip pain

  • Foot pain

  • Nerve dysfunction

  • Headaches

  • Neck pain

  • Diastasis recti

  • Sacroiliac Joint (SIJ) pain

Following the physical trauma of pregnancy and the birthing process, either natural or surgical, your body needs to heal – and it may need help. Low back and pelvic girdle pain related to pregnancy are reported to affect 50% of women at some time during their pregnancy. Post partum, 10-20% of women experiencing chronic low back pain believe the initial onset was in connection with a pregnancy.

Common symptoms with Low Back Pain or Pelvic Girdle Pain can include:

  • Painful sitting

  • Pain with prolonged walking

  • Pain with forward bending

  • Pain with lifting

  • Post-partum depression
