There is one big myth surrounding pelvic floor dysfunction and incontinence in the male population, and that is that there is nothing that can be done about it!  In this overview of our rehabilitation program, hopefully I will dispel that myth AND answer the question “How will I get better with PT?”

The Role of the Pelvic Floor and Pelvic Health

Urologists play a critical role in the diagnosis of many pelvic floor conditions, particularly for the male population. Physical therapists with specific, advanced training in treating the pelvic floor can help restore function. What Happens During an Initial Evaluation of the Pelvic Floor?

During the scheduling and registration process, you can expect to fill out some basic registration and medical history forms, as well as a form or two describing some of your specific symptoms. Once you arrive to your first visit, which is your initial evaluation,  and sit down in a private treatment room with your therapist, you can expect to:

  1. Discuss your current symptoms and associated behaviors in regard to bowel and bladder function, intercourse, and digestion.
  2.  Review your Medical history with your therapist, to include any surgeries and current or past medications.
  3. Next, your therapist will conduct a thorough examination of movement involving spinal movement, hip mobility and trunk capability. An Analysis of pelvic floor muscle activity and capabilities with an external or internal assessment as needed.
  4. After the thorough examination is complete, your therapist will discuss their findings, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment.
  5. Your therapist will then begin the treatment portion of your program by prescribing exercises and/or stretching, behavior changes and techniques to assist in recovery and using biofeedback for muscle activation/relaxation.
  6. A follow-up session will be scheduled. You will do your “homework” between each session by completing the prescribed exercises, make any behavioral changes and apply all of the techniques that were discussed during your initial evaluation. At each visit, our therapist will begin by reviewing how it is all going and any changes you have noticed in your symptoms or dysfunction.
