Have you been waking up in the morning feeling like the room is spinning? Are you off balance or dizzy when turning your head or looking up or down? You may have what is called BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo).
BPPV is a common disorder where crystals in the inner ear get dislodged into one of the three canals that control motion and where your body is in space. This disorder can easily be fixed with Physical Therapy through a series of maneuvers of the head that move the crystals out of the canal. There are numerous eye and head exercises to prevent this disorder from coming back and to help you feel 100%. Treatments can range from one visit up to a few weeks. It is best not to wait if you are feeling this way as symptoms may only get worse.
BPPV is not the only cause of room spinning or feeling dizzy.
Physical Therapists do a thorough evaluation to see where the symptoms are coming from and what is causing it. Balance exercises and postural exercises are clinically proven to help control symptoms and get people functioning how they once were. Balance plays a large role in dizziness. Balance is composed of muscle strength, vision and inner ear function. Making sure all of these systems are working correctly is very important!
Remember! It is not normal to feel dizzy! It is important to get to the root of the problem so you can prevent symptoms from recurring and get you back to feeling normally.
